In an outrageous overreach, and with blatant disregard for the first and most important freedom identified in the First Amendment, the city of Houston had issued subpoenas demanding that pastors turn over their sermons so they can be scrutinized for “objectionable” material. In one case, a mega-church pastor was also ordered to hand over “all communications with members of his congregation.” After prayer and push back from leaders and citizens, the Houston mayor has backed off from issuing subpoenas.
This is just the latest in the ever-increasing attacks on religious freedom in America. We will not be deterred. Now is the time to take action.
Congressman J. Randy Forbes, speaking on the U.S. House Floor explains why, “Religious freedom is the cornerstone of a free society, and every American—regardless of whether we are religious—should be concerned when the government attempts to restrain free exercise. We live in a country whose laws respect freedom and diversity…Freedom of conscience can include nothing less than the way a person lives all aspects of his or her life. As a nation, our laws must encourage and support, not penalize, citizens who seek to adhere to their moral convictions.”
Speaking about the increasing attacks on business owners, therapists, pastors, chaplains, and citizens in all walks of life, Congressman Forbes promises to continue to lead the charge to protect religious freedom. He and the members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus will continue to fight for those who are now being “compelled by law to compromise the very religious beliefs that inspire their lives.”
These egregious attacks on faith are just the beginning:
“A bakery owner in Oregon broke down in tears while discussing the fallout of her and her husband’s decision not to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple on the basis of their Christian beliefs. They now face a fine in excess of $150,000.” Watch video.
“A t-shirt printer in Kentucky could be punished by a so-called human rights commission after refusing to print t-shirts for a homosexual group”. Read more.
“Liberty Ridge Farms, located in New York, was recently fined $10,000 and ordered to pay two lesbians $1,500 each. That’s because the Gifford family, which owns the farm, refused to rent its facilities for a lesbian wedding because of their religious beliefs”. Read more.
Help us fight the dismantling of our Constitution, and the redefinition of our First Freedoms. In the words of Congressman Forbes, “As a nation, our laws must encourage and support, not penalize, citizens who seek to adhere to their moral convictions.”
